Trench construction and backfill details in accordance with Network Raile specifications

Trench Construction

The following instructions comply with Network Rail specifications at the time of writing. In case of any ambiguity, specifications provided by Network Rail shall apply. For readers outside the UK, the installation procedures and practices of your local rail organisation shall apply.

Excavate trench 300mm wider to allow 150mm clearance each side of duct bank.

Deep enough to form a graded bedding (pea gravel) 150mm below and 1100mm cover from top of lowest rail to top of ducts.

Where multiple banks are to be laid, allow 50mm between units to enable proper compaction. Alternatively the ducts layers can be laid in contact, provided the units are staggered longitudinally so that the bell (female) joints are not in contact with the corresponding joint below.

Fill around the ducts with pea gravel to a depth 150mm above the top of the ducts
